London Barbecue School is the UK's leading independent barbecue school. We offer outdoor cookery classes at our purpose-built venue in Peckham, cooking great ingredients on a range of barbecues and smokers, and we run a retail business, selling barbecue equipment online. 2018 is set to be a big year for the school with a new venue, a new bricks-and-mortar shop, and some major developments of our class offering.
The role entails working alongside the school's director in the general management of the operations of the school and shop: you will help ensure the site is operating efficiently, effectively and with excellent health and hygiene standards - as well as getting stuck in to operational nitty gritty. Amongst other tasks, this will entail working with suppliers; dealing with customers' enquiries, with customers at classes; working to assist teaching staff, including ingredients preparation and wash-up; and helping with the smooth-running of the retail part of the business.
The job requires a proactive approach, initiative to see where your work will most assist the operation, and flexibility to adapt to the changing requirements of a business that is growing fast. Experience of working in food and drink or hospitality is desirable, although we are open to applications from highly capable candidates with other work backgrounds. A strong interest in food is essential; barbecue cookery and teaching experience are both highly desirable. HACCP training and/or level 2 food hygiene qualification, and holding a personal license are all advantageous but not essential; we are willing to provide training for the right candidate. IT literacy, accurate and methodical record-keeping, good face-to-face communication and telephone manner are all important attributes.
The job is a seasonal position from mid-April until late-September, on a fixed 5.5 month contract. We offer some flexibility on working hours, but a typical week will entail 35 hours including at least 1 day at the weekend and often a weekday evening. If the candidate is successful, and depending on the growth of the business, it may lead to a year-round position, with the possibility to become increasingly involved in shaping the future of the business. We are equally open to applications from people of all ages, nationalities, religions, genders, sexual orientations etc but it is essential you speak fluent English and can legally reside and work in the UK.
